I know, I know, the shame......
Of course the Homeowner's KGB was watching, probably with a little video camera attached to our neighbor's curb or something....
.....nah, that would spoil their fun. You know they drive slowly along through the neighborhood over and over all day, rubbing their long fingers together in anticipation as they carefully survey each house and yard, using their critical eye and probably even a set of tiny binoculars, to note details that are not in accordance with this neighborhood's Homeowner's Constitution of Covenants, Conditions, & Restrictions (i.e: Instrument #1842411).
So yesterday we received this very serious "notice" that we had been caught in our crime, have 15 days to correct it, and if caught again, we will be fined $20, and if again, a whopping $50.
They even included a picture. See that dark thing behind the like 4 feet of snow on the left side of our driveway? Yep, that would be our scandalous garbage can....

See, normally I drag the obviously atrocious thing behind our side-yard fence and out of sight... because you know, having garbage cans visible at all detrimentally lowers property value for the whole neighborhood, right?
But this particular day I left it in front of the fence because there was a ton of snow on the other side of that gate, blocking me from opening it and which I didn't have time right then to shovel..... But dang it I wish I was more responsible. This is already the first time in the year we've lived here that I've done this. I know, I know, working on it.
This was almost as great as the notice that we all received back in October that we had to sign, "covenanting" that we would not put our basketball hoops anywhere in visible sight, unless during actual use. Who wants to lug a huge heavy hoop in and out of their back yard every time they want to shoot hoops?
I think the people that sit and write these CC&R's must live cold and lonely lives....
Get a goldfish already. Name it. Talk to it. Buy it toys and feel the warmth of making someone else feel happy.

LOL you make me laugh Stephani you really do. I love your humor and sarcasm. Man I didn't know homeowner's associations could be like that sheesh good to know before we ever try and get a house.
That is so funny. I know you are somewhat of a rebel but this come on. I didn't know you would stoop so low. I hope it will all get sorted out and it won't be on your permanent record. Love the picture!
Way funny, but it is so sad, they actually take it so seriously. We live with CC&R's, and sometimes they are such a joke.
Hey, at least you have a pretty good attitude and can turn it into a laugh.
I have to say that I am really disappointed at how irresponsible you are, I mean what kind of example are you setting for your children?!?! ;)
We would never survive in your neighborhood-we just plain couldn't afford it! We would be getting tickets every week. Our garbage day is Friday and we think we're doing good if we get the can off the street by Saturday afternoon!!
You make a good point in that this is a good lesson learned while you are renting!
I feel sorry for these people, they must be really, really bored!
That is hilarious!! I especially love the picture of the offense. You guys ought to be ashamed of yourselves for violating important home owners code #1842411! I guess it is a good thing you are renting! I don't think all neighborhoods are so bad. Thanks for sharing; that made me smile.
Yeah, like I said, we're working on it. Thanks for keeping me in line y'all. ;)
holy moly....
thank goodness I live on that street between the historic district and the ghetto...no one cares (even though it's technically against the law here to leave your trash can out after 6am on garbage day!)
Shame on you guys! I just cannot believe that you would do this! I am appalled! You had better shape up there young lady!
LOL that is just LAME O! Totally not going to buy in a home owners deal BLAH!
that made me laugh. Stupid HOA!
Stephi, you are so funny! I love your sense of humor. I hate those stupid homeowners associations...that is a major reason we moved from our Dumont house that was by your house...we got a violation for steven's truck, because you are not allowed to park a work vehicle on the street or in your driveway for longer than 24 hours. Duh, Steven had to do that, it was our car for his work! so, I totally understand, and I would have been sooo mad. I love you. =)
