Yeah, the one Levi lovingly drags with him everywhere?
Well, he became four little Mater blankets.
I convinced Levi to let me "divide" him (cut was too strong a word for his dear friend) into four pieces so he wouldn't drag on the ground and get dirty everywhere Levi takes him. I also sold him on the idea that then he'd have four Maters instead of one, and that way when one was in the wash, there'd always be another available for him.
I thought I was being so clever. I thought this way he'd be less likely to take him with him to college.
But as it turns out Levi has always favored just one particular corner of Mater blanket. So of the four little Maters, it is the one with this particular corner that he really must have. To identify it, he holds each little Mater to his nose and turns it over in his hands three times. Apparently the correct corner has a certain texture, as well as a certain smell. Even after being freshly washed. Who knew?
And he still wants to keep all three of the other Mater corners anyway of course...

This reminds me of a book called "Owen" (I know cool huh, a lady Jared used to work with gave it to us when Owen was born) about a mouse who doesn't want to give up his blanket. His mom cuts the blanket up in the end too, and he carries little hankies with him in his pocket. Such a great idea, you are so smart! It'll look like a hankie instead of a blanket in college! ;)
Oh my gosh! Ryan does the same thing with his sheep blanket. He got it when he was born, I cut it into 2 so that when one was in the wash he'd have another. But he does the same thing with the blanket, I got so amused watching him turn the blanket and smell it, touch it to his face all just to find the right place to stick it in his mouth (he never took to a binky but he found the comfort in sucking on his blanket). He still sucks on that darn blanket from time to time, but he always is sleeping with it.
