This week I took the kids to the animal shelter. We love to go visit the cat and kitten room. There was this one cat that was pregnant. I wanted to adopt her and let my kids experience brand new kittens.
But they told me if I wanted to adopt her they would abort the babies and spay her before I could take her home. I understand the logic behind stopping strays from reproducing in mass numbers, but I was a little ticked that they would do that.
I sort of drove home and steamed about it through the evening. Then I came up with this brilliant plan.
I decided I was not above bribing my little brother to say he'd lost his cat and go claim it as his own from the shelter. So I sent him an email that began with the bribery money amount, followed by a description of the cat, including a picture.
And so Damon in all his awesomeness, sent me the email reply, "I'm on it!".
When the shelter opened today, he called, then headed over to "see" if they had, uh, "his" cat. And he totally pulled it off and only felt a little bad once, when this sweet old gentleman opened the door for him and asked, "Are you here to adopt a pet?" and Damon replied, "No actually I lost my cat and I'm here to see if she's here." And the old man stopped and said with emotion, "Oh that's so great, you know only 3% of people come looking for their lost pets." and Damon had to smile his Damon smile and pretend to be this saintly young man out looking for his beloved cat.
So he goes in, picks out the cat and says, "Oh there you are Muffin".
But then after realizing that cat wasn't pregnant and re-checking the photo I'd sent him, he realized it was the wrong cat. But he quickly found the right one, and after a slightly embarrassing "Oh wait, there you are Muffin" and more sweet-young-man-out-looking-for-his-beloved-cat smiles... he called me 30 minutes later with the goods in hand. Or actually in a nice comfy box in his car.
So Dabriah and I drove to meet them, swapped the wad of bribery money for the merchandise, stopped in at Ace for some quick cat necessities, and we now have a pregnant cat. Through the mandatory licensing process she has been Christened Muffin. It's a great name Damon.
We got her home and gave her a warm bath, brushed her fur, set her up with blankets and her other needs in the girls' room for the time being, and after petting her and talking to her all day, she is very lovey and not hiding under the bed anymore. She is very very sweet.
She will be delivering her kittens any day.
The kids are so excited. We will find good homes for each of the kittens when they're old enough.

That is so great for you and Damon that you did that for that mama cat why should the babies suffer because someone just left her there? I know Muffin found a great home and that you will help the babies find good homes too. Muffin should do all the work taking care of the babies we had a mama cat once and we didn't have to do much we were just there for the births to make sure she did okay. She will instinctively know when to wean her babies and litter box train them. It's cool to watch by the time they are about 8 weeks old they will be completely weaned and litter box trained if Muffin did her job right. That's great for you guys she is a beautiful cat.
You so got me! Congrats on the kitties!
Crazy Frostads.
I told Damon he needs to find a way to work this story into a talk in singles ward.
